The Technics 1200s are (or were) the DJ industry standard and are still pretty much the go to deck for the majority of DJs who play vinyl. Technics stopped making them a few years ago so I'd hang onto them if I was you (unless you want to sell them to me).

There might better "audiophile" turntables out there, but the 1200s are the most robust and reliable I think.

Having said all that, I bought a pair of Vestax PDX-A2s back in the day and I've been really happy with them. I got them cos they were the ones Mixmaster Mike was using at the time and mission already had 1200s so I decided to get something different. They have a straight tone arm and allow you to be much heavier handed with scratching cos of the way they are built. Plus they are designed "vertically" for use of use in mixing hip hop etc. i.e. the tone arm is at the top rather than the side so it's out of the way.

I mean if you solely want to play EDM then yeah, vinyl is kinda dead and a waste of money and space because you need to buy stuff constantly to keep up with what the kids are listening to. Buying mp3s makes sense if you are primarily concerned with that style of music.

However there is nothing quite like digging through an op shop or garage sale and finding a weird arse bit of vinyl that no other DJ is likely to have. I have, over the years, incorporated some of these records into mashups and tracks that I have made and so it makes your music unique rather than buying the same s*** everyone else gets off the top 100 beatport charts or similar.

Don't get me wrong there's a place for both, I just like the idea of finding stuff off the beaten track, which is why I like vinyl. Well, it's one of the reasons.

Yeah and that has definitely changed music I think, in terms of what artists put out.

In the past, an album usually represented a collection of songs that fit together somehow. I mean, this obviously varies greatly but one example that springs to mind is The Wall - Pink Floyd. this is designed to be listened to as a whole journey, kinda like a (good) DJ set.

Artists could create songs that might take a while to grow on you or that weren't necessarily hit singles but that complemented their other work.

These days our attention span collectively is much shorter and everyone just wants the bangers.

Granted there is the whole thing of fillers which is definitely a consideration - you don't want to buy the album for "Livin on a Prayer" and get lumbered with "Without Love".

I wonder if the concept of an album will slowly die out as we become more obsessed with consuming individual tracks? It seems like this approach will inevitably lead to less filler but also less experimentation and innovation as artists only put out "safe" releases knowing that their less accessible work will probably rarely get listened to.

Of course this only applies to the mass market, plenty of people still make music as they have always done and probably always will, but I think it does change how we consume music and what the expectations will be.

yeah don't get me wrong (literally been said like 4 times in this thread already lols) i'd love to learn vinyl just to be legit but i just can't see how it would possibly help me except cost a f***load of money and take up room that i don't really have

i thought i went legit enough learning to actually beatmatch by ear when i got my decks rather than just using the sync button straight up :p

That's insane. I thought collections of a few hundred were impressive... You must almost need a whole room dedicated just to storage of your records.

My brother inherited my grandparents record player when they passed, since then he has quadrupled his record collection and it continues to grow.

Him and his fiance listen to it almost daily.

As far as I'm concerned, it isn't even close to dead.

When I visit them once a year, it's all we listen to. We love it.
