I have removed the previous thread where I posted this as it had devolved into some ridiculous statements.

-----

To answer a few questions: We know part of what is happening. I'm going to give a very short version, I've given longer versions in the past. I'll answer questions if the answers are allowed by our contracts.

Our BF4 servers are doing exactly what they are programmed to do. Every time there is a group of players kicked from a server, the server goes offline for a while, or the server refuses to let players join even though it is offline, it is performing exactly as it was designed.

In every instance I've been able to find the command from the back end ("Blaze") that tells the server to disconnect the players or go offline. We aren't sitting there laughing while closing network connections and we don't have monkeys flinging poo around the server room and occasionally putting a kink in a network cable. The servers are doing exactly what they are told to do by the back end. The log lines are clear. To paraphrase, we'll see something like:

9:10pm - Incoming message from Blaze: Phenom600 is no longer authorised to be on your server, disconnect him.
9:11pm - Incoming message from Blaze: Staticau's stats didn't seem to upload properly, we guess he isn't online anymore, disconnect him.
etc.

I'll say it again because it is so critical: the servers are doing exactly what they are told to do at all times. If your server kicks 20 players, it is because the back end told it to kick those 20 players. If it goes offline, that is becuase it was told to go offline. If it won't let players join even though it is online, it is because the back end tells the server 'this guy is connecting, let him in' then immediately 'kick this guy'. (That is the "UDP Connection" error that people see).

-----

So, why isn't it fixed already?

There is clearly a network issue somewhere between our datacentre in Sydney and the Blaze backend in the UK. When we get a catastrophic DDOS at our end, it is obvious. When the Blaze servers are DDOS'd, same thing - it is clear that the DDOS blocked the network transmissions.

However, when there is no DDOS going on (or, more likely, when our DDOS mitigation system is working normally) we still see servers going offline or batches of players being dropped. We have an incredibly well connected datacentre with serious redundant links. Blaze is hosted in a world class location in the UK. However, we don't control 99% of the kit between our hardware and Blaze, and the way the system works any little hiccup can cause problems.

As an example: for a few months BF3 servers in Eastern Australia were dropping like flies. The problem ended up being a router in the UK (not in the control of us, DICE or EA) that was dropping packets. As we weren't the customer, the transit provider wouldn't talk to us about it. Once it was fixed, the servers became stable again. There was literally nothing we could do to force the problem to be fixed. Servers in Western Australia weren't affected as their traffic was routed a different way to Blaze, so we copped a bunch of complaints about people saying "My server with you is bad, my server with X is good, you guys suck".

-----

So what are we doing?

We are continuing to work with DICE on improving the behaviour of servers that are logically distant from Blaze. They've made changes in the past, and continue to make changes, to improve how servers with less than perfect connections to Blaze function. Part of the problem at the moment is that DICE appear to have a long-term fix (no ETA, very much not soon, no guarantees at all etc) so there is less interest in putting time into problem they know has already been hypothetically fixed.

Beyond working with DICE, we constantly monitor all of our network connections and work with Telstra's best people on making sure that nothing that we have control over is less than perfect. Everything that we can possibly do is being done.

Thank you,

Clear and concise.

So we live with it or we don't hire servers in Australia..... Either one is not a good option.

One question... and ill throw it open to anyone.... how are games.on.line servers abating the attacks?

edit
How about hosting a backend server in AUS for DICE.....

WolfPack stands by AG during this time. We offer our condolences and understanding.

We understand as a developers, the issues that arise during development/deployment are not always simple and not always easy to resolve, especially when they are network related.

It is our view that you are doing the best to resolve such issues and that some these issues are out of your hands.

If you require any assistance in these matters, WolfPack is happy to offer its member base to try and resolve such issues.

We also experiencing the above troubles with disconnections - with that, we are researching into different methods of verifying its source, and will report back as soon as our findings are complete.

Brendan, I'll make a few points and would like for you to respond to these points directly. I'd appreciate my post remaining in tact and not being deleted this time as well.

- What GSP offers gameservers in WA? game.on.net provides a couple of instances, however GS isn't renting any out in that location. None have been available in over two years which is when Hypernia stopped selling them as their partnership with iinet came to an end.

- Both AS numbers for iinet/internode send traffic from Perth -> Sydney -> USA -> Europe to the EA back end, which makes sense since they use SEA-ME-WE3 as a backup link from Singapore to London which is reflected in the limited capacity available (1Gbit) happy to provide the traceroutes if required.

- You mention that AG was unable to do anything about the situation, yet Telstra owns a couple of pairs on the SEA-ME-WE3 cable, and if they wanted to could easily make some routing changes to send traffic down that same cable you mentioned iinet was using to get around the issue.

- We have equipment located in the USA, in fact it's about 1-2ms away from Telstras own network equipment which resides in that DC. Granted you connect over Cogent to the EA backend (using your looking glass and looking at the BGP peering info), we also take the same path as we use the same provider (in the same DC). Wouldn't we also be seeing these problems as well granted the only difference in network is between AU and the USA?

- You've asked the question previously if other GSPs are more stable than the service AG is currently offering, there's been a few detailed responses however it's brought up again, what exactly are you after here? the information a user can provide you with is extremely limited, in fact GS don't even provide graphs for anything. I will say though just checking out the gametracker website, none of your IPs are on the first page, second page and I believe it's not until the third page that there's a single mention of a server running at AG infrastructure/network.

Is this not enough to suggest that there are some big issues with stability at AG that isn't effecting the other GSPs? it's not through lack of AG members signing up to GT, there's plenty of them on there, in fact ours were at the top of the list for a while.

- Whenever there's questions being asked the "contract" word is often brought up, I appreciate the fact you're a lawyer and likely to take this far more serious than most other people, however GS, i3d, multiplay, hypernia and NFO all release far more information than you ever have. Why is this? If it's a contract with Telstra that's different I am more than happy to hear that as a response, I'm just after a response....

Malthius,

Can you please let us all know what DICE and Ausgamers are doing/going to do about the current issue. For over two weeks our servers have been completely unstable, effectively unusable.

Do we just not use Ausgamers for DICE games?

What we are doing with DICE is getting as much data to them as possible in order to verify exactly where and why it is happening. This includes all server logs of those who have said they are affected and those that haven't been vocal but we have seen disconnects. We are also sending through logs of customers who aren't experiencing disconnects to understand why they aren't being affected.

I know it annoys people when you are told the same thing over with little variation on what has changed, but with how sensitive some of this data is it gets a bit tricky on what we can/can't say. The bottom line is for us, is that we work on getting our service better than what it currently is, both through changes to the backend and changes to the front end. We've posted previously about a new patch currently in the works for AusGamers Server Rentals that will bring forth a lot of new changes, including new ticket support system, all from comments and feedback thanks to you, our customers.

I don't like blanketing things, I get it enough from other services I personally use and I know how frustrating it is to not know what is going on as the customer. We are trying our hardest to get these issues sorted because we know how annoying it is, but please be aware that these are only affecting DICE titles, and we have tested it with other games to determine that. Obviously you folks only care about the Battlefield side of things, which is why you are renting Battlefield 4 servers, so that information doesn't help. As Brendan said, DICE have a long-term fix however that has no current ETA, which is also impeding their helpfulness in sorting it out for the short term.

Again, we will let people know when we hear changes, and keep everyone up-to-date. As we have already been doing, we will offer compensation for any downtime players have experienced, just throw us a ticket and we'll respond.

Also, on the topic of the past discussion thread, that was locked and some comments were deleted because they devolved into unrelated commentary. This will be the go-to discussion thread for any disconnection-related material.

I am really having a hard time trying to find reasons why we should stay with AusGamers or anything EA/DICE related with what has occurred over the last month the b0oz members are also asking why we put up with and pay for such a lousy server provider.
I have posted them link's to your forums to see your responses but all they see is fancy excuses and blame shifting, They see other servers up and running and wonder why we don't change providers.
As most players are only on for a short time they don't see the other providers crashing as much as they see their own clan servers crashing and most other providers don't seem to crash as much or as often as AusGamers. They are losing faith in us as well as you.
It is one thing for guy's to keep telling us what the problem is but if it is as you say a DICE problem how about asking a DICE representative to address this forum and explain this long term fix for this problem and what sort of timeframe are we expected to pay for half a service because I for one have just about had enough of this crap, Star Citizen is looking better every day.

Greetings

Just thought I would drop by and make a note that my server at GameServers (in Sydney) is currently suffering hourly (to the second) mass disconnects amid a minute long lag patch - and has been for around the last 2 weeks. Is anyone else seeing time patterns in the disconnects?

I came by this forum as it seems to have the most information on the subject, a lot more details than I'm getting through the support ticket process with my GSP.

Would it be of benefit to share stats of disconnections across providers?

I highlighted an example issue that occurred last year, it isn't a current issue so I'm not sure of the relevance.

- You mention that AG was unable to do anything about the situation, yet Telstra owns a couple of pairs on the SEA-ME-WE3 cable, and if they wanted to could easily make some routing changes to send traffic down that same cable you mentioned iinet was using to get around the issue.

We aren't Telstra. We have an excellent relationship with them, but we cannot expect them to make that sort of routing change for us without overwhelming evidence of a specific issue, which as of yet we are not able to provide.

No answer here sorry, this one is a bit above my pay grade.

- You've asked the question previously if other GSPs are more stable than the service AG is currently offering, there's been a few detailed responses however it's brought up again, what exactly are you after here? the information a user can provide you with is extremely limited, in fact GS don't even provide graphs for anything. No player graphs at all? That is a bit ... I'm looking to track the amount of back end drops / player disconnections. If it isn't possible through their interface, I'm sure someone (me?) could write a ProCon plugin to do that quite quickly. If I can show that the stability issues are only or much worse with our servers, that will be direct evidence - or if I can show that we aren't worse than anyone else, then we can get some traction with DICE there too.

- Whenever there's questions being asked the "contract" word is often brought up, I appreciate the fact you're a lawyer and likely to take this far more serious than most other people, however GS, i3d, multiplay, hypernia and NFO all release far more information than you ever have. They release far more information? That isn't my understanding of the situation based on other customer feedback. What information do any of our competitors give publicly that we don't give? What information do you want that we don't give?

Brendan, you can run winmtr on a host and ping the EA backend for 24 hours right? I take it you've done this and I for one would love to see the results. On the flip side I would hope EA/DICE have done the same thing back to your host and it would be nice to see that information posted here also.

I have a few megs worth of log files from i3d, multiplay, GameServers and Ausgamers that outlines every crash/disconnect, more than happy to provide this information if you start posting up some of the information that we've asked for ;) mind you I have posted this previously in other threads and none are as bad as AG currently is.

Have you run wireshark on a node when it's constantly dropping players and examined the output? I know it's painful but is it something you've done?

Gametracker does provide you with a pretty good overview of the stability of your service vs other GSPs, of course it doesn't help you with why, but no user here can help you with that either. Our bf4 server with you was ranked 3rd in the world until it couldn't stay up and was cancelled.

As for the other GSPs, I can provide you with ticket numbers if required or screenshots of the tickets but in most cases our issues with disconnections are related to DDoS attacks. More than happy to provide this information to you from GS/i3d which I've used recently, I even have specific information relating to the types of attacks that have been used. Confirmation that a single instance on a node can be taken out by an attack as well it just depends on the size of the attack to what exactly goes down.

Heck i3d even went as far as to say they were having a lot of problems with their network provider here in AU.

If you are limited in what you can do because of Telstra, what exactly are you doing to get around that issue?

We've done this to hosts close to the EA backend (as the actual hosts block ICMP) and had 0% packet loss.

I'm not sure specifically what information you are asking for that I've not provided.

Have you run wireshark on a node when it's constantly dropping players and examined the output? I know it's painful but is it something you've done?

Painful isn't an issue. I honestly can't see what the value would be though.

Gametracker does provide you with a pretty good overview of the stability of your service vs other GSPs, of course it doesn't help you with why, but no user here can help you with that either. Our bf4 server with you was ranked 3rd in the world until it couldn't stay up and was cancelled.

The resolution of the information is insufficient for our purposes.

As for the other GSPs, I can provide you with ticket numbers if required or screenshots of the tickets but in most cases our issues with disconnections are related to DDoS attacks. We've had this discussion many times. I'm yet to be remotely convinced that a single server on a host can be taken down by a DDOS, but I'm happy to reconsider this if you can point to any actual proof. Not circumstantial evidence, proof that the tool that can do this exists.

Heck i3d even went as far as to say they were having a lot of problems with their network provider here in AU.
If you are limited in what you can do because of Telstra, what exactly are you doing to get around that issue?

We don't have any problems with Telstra. We monitor all the connections constantly and find no issue at all. We aren't limited by Telstra at this point because we have no specific requests of them. If we were to identify a transit issue with evidence to back it up, they'd certainly accept a request from us. As I said, we have a great relationship with them. We just can't randomly ask for serious network changes with no evidence.

Well I think we can both agree you have some type of network issue, if you're running winmtr and it's coming back with 0% loss, minimal jitter then the next logical place to look would be on the hosts themselves. You'd use a tool like wireshark to examine the network traffic/packets and confirm there's nothing else going on, it's a process of elimination and a tool I've used many times before.

Brendan, in terms of proof what exactly are you after? I'm not about to go getting myself locked up to prove a point so what constitutes proof? In the mean time I will try and work with John from (NFO servers) to see if we can put together a test.

Good morning gentlemen,

We observed a full dump on our GS server at 20:26 last night, battlelog coming back online around 30 mins previously, which we're assuming was related. There were a few bursts of lag but no mass drops after that for the remainder of the evening, which is acceptable. I am cautiously optimistic.

Static - Yes we had to reboot after the big Battlelog crash to appear in the browser also, we assume this is a side-affect of the crash.

There is a state change with our GS server, it is no longer hourly dumping after around 2 weeks of constant "malicious traffic".
As GS refuse to give details we can only hope our mention of dropping our service with them (out of necessity) had nothing to do with the resolution.

I won't post logs for the last 2 weeks as the server was lagging at exactly 53 minutes and 23 seconds each hour, 24 hours a day - then dumping all players. Has anyone seen attacks this consistent?

Phenom - we think coming back to AU servers might be a tactical error until this is resolved. In fact, your route might be the only viable one until DICE stops rolling snake-eyes with this, which is of course a real shame.

+1 to Malthius for his honest interest in solving this for the whole community.

Interesting that GS don't provide you with any information as they do inform me, if the first person who responds doesn't know they pass it onto someone else to investigate. There's been a few issues with the network in terms of packet loss that I had to force them to pass onto iinet, however it was resolved eventually, a few other minor issues but the rest they've confirmed are DDoS attacks.

I can tell you now GS is handling the DDoS attacks a hell of a lot better now than they were a year ago, hence there's been a huge improvement in the stability of the service which you can clearly see in the GT rankings page which used to be dominated by AG instances. I'd say the attacks they are now having to deal with are probably fairly large but they don't divulge that information.

I do know through attacks on our own gear (website teamspeak) that most of the attacks are relatively small in size, we've only had 1x large attack and speaking with John @ NFO in the past he confirmed that's generally what they see.

If you remove the "procon reconnect" issues from that log file I posted as an example and compare it to the AG log file you can clearly see there's a massive issue here at AG in comparison to GS, which is highlighted in the pretty graphs for every ones servers, in the GT server rankings....

Why I don't buy the whole scenario that it's an issue impacting on all GSPs, is that we've brought online instances without our name in them and they've remained up for days, wack our name in there and within a short period of time they are going offline constantly. Plus the fact from every other single GSP in existence in AU confirmed our instances constantly go offline due to attacks. To quote i3d "you are our most attacked client ever".

I believe it's just the nature of offering gaming services that this happens, prior to running up dayz on our own hardware in the USA we had never received a single DDoS attack and I've been running them there since 1998, once we went into DayZ we started getting hit daily and ended up having to spend $$ to get behind a protected network.

One other point is that some games tend to handle it better than others, with i3d our bf4 instance would go down from an attack, our dayz instance when we ran one locally on the exact same network would remain up. So I would say it only has to be a minor interruption to the EA backend for all users to get booted. If it takes 5-10 seconds for the filtering to kick in (not always active) then that could be enough in itself to drop the connection.

Either way I'll stop my rant, I do expect some form of compensation for the past 3x years though when I'm proven right eventually ;)

"I'm looking to track the amount of back end drops / player disconnections. If it isn't possible through their interface, I'm sure someone (me?) could write a ProCon plugin to do that quite quickly. If I can show that the stability issues are only or much worse with our servers, that will be direct evidence - or if I can show that we aren't worse than anyone else, then we can get some traction with DICE there too."

Install Splunk and point it at your Procon log directories. Then you can use Splunk to search and filter the logs for disconnects. Works a charm. Also helps with team killers, language etc....

Since moving to another provider after cancelling with AG, I am yet to see a crash/drop-out/blaze dump..

While i believe that there is some issues around DDoS against AG, it seems to me that either;

1 - Their DDoS protection is underpowered AND they are being DDoS'ed all the time
2 - Other issues not related to DDoS are the real cause (more likely)

Either way I hope that it can be sorted out for the AU BF community, and if they do fix it I will be more than happy to support them by renting another server. Until then I cant justify throwing away money for a service that simply does not remain operational.

And that is totally understandable, and one I agree wholeheartedly with. We welcome any and all feedback, and if you aren't feeling satisfied then we will work on getting that satisfaction back. At this time Malthius and myself are working hard trying to figure out the cause of this issue, and as Malthius has said DICE have a long-term fix but at this stage are not offering any short term fixes.

I know that yourself and Malthius are working hard to resolve theses issue but to be honest, its a little too late. Given the state of BF4 in general and that we are 9 or so months since launch, relying on DICE to provide a fix seems flawed.

Clearly I don't have the insight to your infrastructure that you do, but it seems evident that it is an AG problem more so than a BF4 problem. I acknowledge that issues affect all GSP's (which cant be avoided such as DDoS and blaze dumps) but there is something else going on at AG that other GSP's do not suffer from. It would be nice to see AG at least acknowledge that and attempt to resolve it rather than the normal response of 'Its DDos' or it's 'DICE'.

Speaking personally, the money side isn't the major issue for me as a client. The biggest issue is populating my server and with constant disconnects and server offline issues, this becomes almost impossible. The many many hours spent trying to get your server popular only to have them wasted by instability is what tipped me over the edge.

I hope that you can identify whatever is causing the problems and resolve them but would encourage you to be more open and to accept that somewhere, somehow this issue is more of a problem at AG than other GSP's.

Ok.. Given i am not a psychologist, I doubt I can help with that but I suggest a few beers and a relaxing weekend.

On the topic of my AG server, the most consistent event that would occur was dumping all players at the end of a round. Although this would happen at other times, at the end/start of a round was the most common.

This is expected, the end of round is when the most intense connection activity with the back end happens (final stats reporting etc, as well as a cluster of players leaving because the map has finished).

bf4admin it would have been awesome if I had your problem, our player base just wanted to have a game and while some would whinge about losing their score right at the end, actually being able to play for longer than ten minutes would have been something at least.

Brendan, this problem has been ongoing for approximately three years now, sure it's impacting on more people than it was previously, but it's the exact same thing that I've been whinging about for three years.

My clan pointed out various posts on our forums, from you directly, support tickets I had posted and also emails, it actually upset me a fair bit granted how long this has dragged on for and the impact it's had on our clan.

I'm not having a dig here, which is probably a bad way to start the sentence, but I just find it extremely hard to believe that you guys are unable to locate the issue. I can't say I've ever heard of an issue dragging on for this long without a resolution, and I say that with all due respect.

What frustrates me even more is Eorl states that you are both working hard on finding the cause of the issue, in the same sentence that DICE has a long term fix which would mean DICE has identified the issue so knows exactly what's wrong, so can you elaborate for us please?

Gameservers have been fine for the past 48 hours for us... prior to that though here's a few support ticket responses as examples...

We are sorry for the delay and inconvenience. There have been some recent network interruptions as the result of DDOS attacks. While we do have preventative measures in place the server may experience a brief interruption before the attack can be fully mitigated. We will be monitoring the location for any further events and make what adjustments we can to help prevent further incidents.

Sorry for the delay, your server should now be online and working correctly.
It appears there was a network attack at your location, which has now been resolved.
Please let us know if you have any more problems.

We are always working on resolving potential issues, but in the case of Australia, there is a limit to what can be done as the general internet infrastructure in that country is pretty lousy overall. We are doing everything we can to prevent issues on our own network, but due to the way the internet is laid out in Australia, it is extremely susceptible to this sort of issue.

My favourite one from i3d.....

Regarding DDOS: Your instances are constantly being attacked. About 90% of these are being automatically caught and filtered away by the anti ddos system in place. Last figures I had were an average of 7-10 attacks per day.

I have nothing against AG, in fact, AG would probably always be my first choice provider by far.

I can confirm our experience has been as others have stated here, i.e. there is something at AG specifically that is worse than other GSPs.
For example, for stretches lasting a couple of weeks, our instance disconnected players en masse every couple of hours, which made starting the server a futile task and pretty much rendering the server useless.

We have now rented an instance from another provider, and it is much better - still having problems, but reduced to maybe twice a week at most.

I have also observed this pattern (Both in back in BF3 and also in BF4):
Our server going down regularly.
Rent a server from another provider (and naming the server exactly the same)
For the first week the server is perfect.
Then back to server going down regularly.

Coincidence or shenanigans?

Still no one has explain how other Australian providers servers are able to have players online for 5+ hours at a stretch. The instant our servers have a few players, LAG starts and before the end of the round all are dropped.

This is now coming up on a month of this instability and inability of us not being able to use our servers that we have paid for.

I don't have an absolute answer, this is all still provisional:

The issue is almost certainly an issue with the network connection between our datacentre in Sydney and the Blaze back end servers in London.

I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but we (Mammoth) have a number of sites in Australia where we provide VPS services. I've been tracking network connectivity / quality from both our Brisbane and Sydney based VPS, as well as AusGamer's servers in Sydney and GameArena servers in Melbourne.

What I've found is serious levels of packet loss at a router in London. What is causing me some confusion is that the same router (or team of routers) appears to handle incoming connections from all of our sites. The routing is very similar (but not identical) once the connections leave Australia, hit that particular router, and then get very different connection qualities. I've run tests from four sites simultaneously and had 10% packet loss from one site and 0-1% from the other three sites. if the AusGamers server has 10% packetloss, we expect the disconnections we are seeing. However, it seems quite random which of our sites will get packetloss at any particular time.

DICE have offered more resourced to help with this issue, and when we have anything positive to report, we'll certainly let everyone know.

Between fixing these issues (hopefully permanently) and some other stuff we have coming up, I'm feeling positive about what we can offer you guys for the first time in a while.

I can't give specific details, but let me give you an analogy:

You have some plastic irrigation pipes that take water from your dam to your crops. The pipes leak water, and sometimes they leak so much that you don't get any water to the crops.

You know that you need to stop the leaks, so you investigate. You find that the pipes are leaking at joins in the pipes because the water pressure is too high. You don't know which join will leak at any particular time. You decide in the long term to replace the plastic pipes with copper pipes that you know will support the high pressure. You can't replace all the pipes right now though (cost too high, can't stop watering the crops during the growing season, whatever). In the short term, you have to find and fix the leaky joins.

That is where we are at at the moment. DICE may have a long term fix (nothing guaranteed etc, all very long term), but that doesn't help us right now, so we are working on improving the situation in the short term. Huge props to DICE for taking the time to help Australian gamers.

Oh, the issue is easy: there is a network connectivity issue between Sydney and London.

You know that over the years we've had months where everything is very stable, and months like this where there are stability problems. There isn't one "issue" to locate, one single cause to find and fix. Some of the examples of causes of network problems:

Dodgy border routers in London: this smashed BF3 for at least 3 months (and looks like the current cause of the problem BTW).
DDOS - TCP (botnet): Floods a huge problem on and off for 18 months until we were able to get some awesome DDOS protection kit.
DDOS - DNS Reflectiion: after we sorted the TCP floods, this was a big attack for a while until our DDOS ninjas got it under control.
DDOS - NTP Reflection: we were one of the first sites in the world hit by this (about 3 weeks before it became common knowledge) and it took some time (same as the rest of the world) to calibrate the packet scrubbers to handle it.
DDOS attacks on Blaze itself: an occasional problem.

We've also had stability problems caused by server crashing (BF4 launch and after one of the patches) and an almost hilarious one where Battlelog was crashing servers.

Again: there isn't one thing to fix. If there was, we'd fix it. With how much money we've spent chasing all those problems, if it was just one particular problem we'd have been able to buy our own high reliability network.

I've been monitoring from SJ/LA to the blaze backend via Cogent and Level3 and I've not been able to identify any loss, in fact it's been rock solid which is confirmed by our US based instances being rock solid.

I don't have access to your kit, however using the telstra looking glass from Melbourne it picks up the same hop on Cogent and carries on down the same path to the back end.

BGP info states you're only going to take Cogent or Level3, and the preference was Cogent.

For the record my kit (both connections) are 2ms and 2x hops from where Telstra enters the USA, one lot of gear is in the same DC.

Looking at the EA back end I'm not too sure what they are going to do to improve upon their connectivity, it's rather well connected as it is.

I've provided plenty of traceroutes (winmtr) both locally and from the USA that demonstrate packetloss to the AG servers, all of which clearly show packetloss on the Telstra network 1-2 hops before the server itself.

Connecting back from where the EA kit is located to the Telstra network it goes via Level3 to LA where it then changes over to Telstra, no loss was picked up in the few hours of testing I did, however people were still dropping like flies.

Brendan I don't see chargen in that list which can be amplified far more than DNS.

I only have data, I'm not qualified to make conclusions, but I'm seeing some odd network issues with traces run from a London VPS to our hosts that i'm not seeing on a mirrored trace from our hosts to London. I'm not seeing the same issue from VPS within Australia.

It is data, not a conclusion, but data is good, and it is replicable.

Return path for me was the same to two seperate providers in LA, and in multiple tests I couldn't fault it. I hope it is the issue however I'd be surprised if it is as that would be one very long running network issue.

You mind posting up the traceroute back to the host from london as I'm curious to see if its the same/similar. Ovbiously the GA ip is known so if you want to drop the first two hops out from your london vps that's fine.

Brendan I brought up chargen, I take it that's disabled on the hosts? If it isn't are you able to get it disabled on a specific host and see if there's a reduction in drop outs.

Using wireshark this type of thing would be easy to spot of course :)

I would like to know when this issue is to be resolved, it is near on impossible to run the server with the random disconnects. No one wants to join the server anymore. Hell i am even getting sick of the F...en thing.

I want... no need! to know what Ausgamers are going to do to resolve it. Not what you have found... but what and when you are going to do to resolve it.

If you cannot answer this then i have no choice but to move our servers to a provider that does not have this issue.

I continued the service for another month on the 14th to show that we want to support you and hoping you would have it resolved soon. By the looks of it it was a bad choice and a waste of money.

I would have expected a update in this thread at minimum, once every business day but not even that.... CLAN servers take time to set up and make them popular. This issue has ruined ours.

Thanks Malthius

Seems ever since the lates BF4 update I have been having mass player drops from my server last night 5 times some details
First time
About 6 pm had about 15 players on then crash all players kicked

Second time
Finally got through 1 round got half way through the second a full 64 players bang all kicked

Third time
about 7 pm had around 50 player crash all kicked

Fourth time
another about 30 players online 20 minutes later crash all players kicked

Fifth time
10 minutes later around 15 players on crash all kicked

there were 2 or 3 more time later but by that time we all had enough
this has been happening like i said since the last update, also the server itself never reset itself
every time it crashed just kicked all players...

Now for something new and totally annoying when the server kicks everyone(this is not new). When we rejoin all our unlocks are gone(this is new) so now we have another stuff up just to cause more frustration it is like the server restarts and loads a default config but it stays on the same map that kicked everyone like the usual blaze disconnection we are already annoyed with. This is getting very frustrating so can you give us an update please because you may have noticed I am not happy

I am speaking from a mate of mine, who had issues with the current server crashes. Static while its patriotic for you to stay on supporting AusGamers. Our recently cancelled AusGamers instance is having the exact same issue, ive never seen the disconnects so bad. The server will only last for about 30 minutes before everyone leaves. AusGamers service was fantastic for about a month of 2 after BF4 actually released. Since Feburary thats when the issues started to arise.

We have currently moved hosters, contrary to what people said here about "Dont leave AusGamers, other servers have the same issue". I have opened up a Hypernia 64 slot server. While its almost costing $20 more per month, the service has been fantastic, support tickets get answered within 5 minutes! My server is now popular again. At worse I will only get 1 disconnects in a day, which is very tolerable.

There is no point supporting a company that cannot provide you with the server you are paying for. Whilst the AusGamers crew tries to resolve the issue to their very best, don't fork out your money when you are getting service like this. I personally think AusGamers should be providing refunds to customers for the horrible/almost non-existant service, and actually start charging people once they have fixed it.

My advise to static and the others, just swap providers, it will be worth very extra penny.

Little_lerroyy,

I had a 32 slot Hypernia server for bf3 after GA closed and I did not get a great server or service.
The server was laggy with only 4 players in it and we only let AU and NZ play on it, It crashed regularly not just with blaze issues it had to be restarted 2-3 times a day, The procon layer was constantly running 2-4 seconds behind the server and crashed more than the game server.
I got quick 5min responses from support who blamed the plugins I used or the Australian internet and would not give refunds or extend billings dates for compensation.
I used to play on the GC bf3 servers until snotty changed to Hypernia, His servers were very laggy and kept having players freeze in game with the orange triangle disconnection icon showing in the top right hand corner. The Hypernia bf4 servers I have played on are laggy and they disconnect just like every other Australian server.

How long have you been running your new Hypernia server for?
Why does it disconnect once a day?
Is it a blaze disconnection or is the server crashing?
What is the name of your server? Give us a link so we can check it out.

My servers used to run without disconnecting or crashing all the time, They were very reliable and that made them popular .Now sometimes they run for 6-8 hrs and other times we would be lucky to get through a round. It is frustrating and does make me and my clan mates angry at times but at the moment we are willing to keep our servers because it may help AusGamers staff to solve the issues if players are on the servers at least they can tell when a blaze has happened and then have some data to work with. I see no reason why it can't be fixed it is either hardware or a software problem not some magical mysterious alien problem, Maybe cost will stop a fix but I am sure they will let us know if that's the case.
AusGamers have been helpful with the bills and I have found their support with this and other issues very good compared to Hypernia's standard your network in AU is no good we can't help you response.
At least Malthius put in an effort to try to explain the problem although another update would be nice. (HINT)

I think moving elsewhere will provide a slight improvement in terms of customer service and possibly more stability, after all gameservers stated they put in place some measures to prevent the DDoS attacks and to some extent it did make a slight improvement.

Suggesting Hypernia as the choice for people is something I can't recommend against strongly enough, they take the award for worst GSP ever, probably the worst company I have ever dealt with actually and I have no intention of having any form of contact with them again.

On the same token, Ausgamers support leaves a lot to be desired, I rarely received responses to emails/support tickets and we've spent a fair amount of money over the years with Ausgamers, so for things to end this way is rather disappointing.

I only asked for a credit once or twice when I'd had enough and the servers were only just renewed, the rest I chalked up to "helping the cause" hoping that one day things would improve.

So I guess if you value a little more stability and someone making you feel warm and fuzzy when you log a ticket, then sure pay the $30-50 USD and move elsewhere, it's what we've done countless times now (generally keeping an instance here still) and I often question why I bother wasting my time at all in AU.

Although it's of little use, you don't see these issues in the USA, even when it's only an additional 100ms and 2-3 hops extra, the service is rock solid for weeks at a time, our lockers instance ran for 3x weeks straight 24/7, no restart with people in it at all times. It's only generally interrupted through updates from DICE, and they run the same files that DICE send them that every other GSP runs around the world, including here.

Just over a month, It's either a Blaze disconnect or an outright crash.

Weird, so far, touch wood, I'm very impressed with the service (obviously this can change). Maybe im just used to the high volume of crashes my AusGamers instance has, whilst 1 disconnect per day is so minor in comparison. Well regarding your USA instance, that's a very nice uptime, very impressive. It's a shame that people need to take money overseas to get the better class of servers.

I agree, and with cte making improvements to the game it makes the latency even less noticeable.

Here's an example of another GSP support tickets over the last few days...

(their response to me asking what's going on)
Dear Customer,

The server has been going down due to it being attacked, there isn't anything we can do to stop this from happening.

Best regards,

((their response when I said it's not good enough)
Hello Jason,

We'll look into this and will let you know about the possibilities.

(their updated response)
Dear Customer,

We do have our own network in Australia, but will not be hosting gameservers there.
Our gameservers are hosted with Xhost/Dedicated Gaming and we will not be looking into expanding the traffic in order to resolve DDOS issues. Seeing as this is very expensive as well.

Best regards

So for us, we've grown a little tired of GSP's telling us that we are their most attacked client they've ever had, and that they can't do anything about it. I'm unsure how GSPs can offer a service without ddos protection or very limited connectivity but unfortunately DICE doesn't impose, or appear to impose from what I can see any minimum requirements on GSPs.

I see this get around lots. Really though? A game server with ddos protection? There is no such thing. No single server can withstand a ddos.

The server has one IP. If it changes or drops, everyone loses connection to the game. So when the IP gets flooded, nothing can be done about it besides diverting the traffic elsewhere or nullrouting.

What's that? Null every port except the game ports? Ok, ddos using the game port then. gg server.

There is no protection. AG probably don't have the balls to tell you that but I don't mind.

Edit: Without reading through this whole section: I can almost bet that AG, smartly, haven't ever said they 'have' ddos protection for game servers.

Then you should likely research the topic a little more ph33x as there's several providers that offer ddos protection for game servers. Ausgamers has indicated on numerous occasions that they have protection.

In the USA we initially sustained a fair few attacks including one up to ~110Gbit, players continued to play unaware of what was going on. Given the level of protection we've gone from 7 to 10 attacks per day to none.

Generally ddos mitigation is performed as a multi tiered approach with the filtering occurring prior to reaching the server.

Even if an attack isn't caught automatically you can always add in custom filters to block it for future attacks. And yes this does happen.

The issues in AU and I'd say most don't apply to Telstra is the limited capacity of upstream providers, a 110Gbit attack and this isn't even talking pps would take out most players in the AU market.

Of course the application also plays an important factor and it doesn't take much to have an impact on a battlefield instance, even a few seconds of an unfiltered attack will disconnect everyone which is why tweaking of the systems is important.

BTW we've been taking hits now for 4x years, after spending a lot of time and money I am rather familiar with what works and doesn't.

Hypernia is still good however i think our server is getting DDosed. Im getting the UDP error. This mean a DDoS attack? Also when it happens everyone on the server freezes, then about 10 seconds later everyone is booted.

We have had one Blaze disconnect in two weeks with our new Hypernia server.

Admittedly it is not really popular at the moment as that takes time to rebuild the player base and the clans server reputation, this issue at Ausgamers destroyed the our clan servers reputations.

We can regularly populate the server and play without any issues during prime hours.

Can I assume Ausgamer servers are still experience Blaze disconnects?

FYI.
No Ausgamer servers are in the top 20 of Australian Gametracker tracked servers..... Servers with Hypernia host ip range of 27.51.93.x, number 12 in the top 20 servers in Australia for BattleField 4.

So for us, we have canceled our Ausgamer servers and unfortunately will not be supporting them in the future as their lack of action regarding one and a half months of inability to provide functioning servers and their no responsibility no care attitude.

They seem to not understand that this is their problem that they need to fix.

Who are you hosting with? We moved from here to Gameservers and while they were tolerable for a while we are sick of switching servers every few weeks when they become unplayable due to frequent lagging and disconnects.

Since BF4's release we have tried all the aussie hosts and all have failed for us. I wouldn't mind knowing of one that isn't suffering the same problems.

Attention server admins, please send through your stored fail.log files to captainblackjackbf4@gmail.com for analysis and merging. Stay tuned for an interface to see how your server/provider fares to the rest and perhaps perceive any kind of patterns, as well as a modified fail log plugin to automatically report blaze disconnects to said site. For now though any historic data would be extremely useful.

After reading the above comments and talking to BF4 players and Spartan Clan members we were wondering if all Australian Clans and Server providers make a petition to the Australian CEO of EA or Board. In regards to installing a Backend Blaze Server in either Asia or Australia. If someone can make a petition and clans point their members there that could be a start? Battlefield 3 was bad but the disconnects with BF4 almost makes the persistence to continue playing it impossible.

So they cave in and create one, although this is something they haven't even done in the USA, then what? How do you know that's going to fix the issue?

Even though we've fixed most of our issues, a better solution to what you proposed would be for all GSPs to run a local DB as a staging area that replicates back to the master. You then remove any dependency on an external network.

That of course introduces some other issues but nothing that can't be easily resolved.

Good morning gentlemen

I have compiled the logs posted here and from our server and posted them here: http://54.201.246.167 (you can use the server dns www.247blackjackandhookers.com but that may raise some eyebrows at work ;) I'll get another domain setup if there is enough interest )

Phenom600 I'm particular interested in your data because of your high population counts - you would experience this more than others statistically.

While I was looking at ways to detect failures I gathered some information here: http://54.201.246.167/ranking.php that shows when particular groups are having troubles a little more clearly than gametracker. A script polls battlelog (not your servers directly) twice an hour to gather this data and the provider population graph, so its not particularly fine grained. Sort by Avg for overall average number of players. It's raw but somewhat interesting and relevant.

I'd like to emphasize this isn't about shaming GSP's, as I believe the issues are more in the design of the system, and frankly everyone gets screwed with these issues.

Probably bugs and issues and security flaws, consider it alpha at this stage, so keep a copy of your logs. Any feedback appreciated, either here or captainblackjackbf4@gmail.com

We've got our own setup now and while there's still restrictions in place I have a lot more access.

We've had a few blaze disconnects, an outage on vocus caused players to drop and the rest relate to ddos attacks.

We are at the stage now where we can filter the attacks, players can play fine during an attack but within 5 to 10 seconds of the attack stopping we drop some of our instances.

We are working on resolving that now.

Don't believe there were any attacks lastnight, usually it's morning, afternoon and night that we have to deal with it.

Removed some of the dlc maps for being unstable as well, too many crashes.

Just a FYI, if you notice your players are less than than you max player size and you have people in the queue, that's usually a symptom of an attack that wasn't enough to take down the instance.

I'm no DICE dev but it looks like it's increasing the queue count as nee players connect, attempts to allow a player to join that can't actually join due to the attack so ends up booting everyone out.

I believe I can disable the queue so might give it a go and see if it makes any difference.

As for the logs, I run the minimal amount of plugins that I have to, to reduce the load on the rcon. I've noticed some stutter in game on occasion which I couldn't work out why, when I went into procon that was lagging like s***, found a plugin hammering the DB, once disabled no more stutter in-game.

PB can cause issues in-game as well, just up the frequency of screenshot captures and you can easily introduce lag into the game. You can tweak a few of the PB settings, and disable screenshots.

[20140621_16:47:19] Type:GAME_SERVER_RESTART, UTC:20140621_07:17:19, Mode:Carrier Assault Large, Round:1/1, Players:64/60/0,

It shows the server was restarted with 60 players on it. It pretty much resembled a Blaze event, but shows up as a server restart. I am 100% sure there was no server restart. Or is it just a server crash with restart?

Good morning gentlemen

Phenom600: Yes I've noticed similar issue with StatsLogger. The queue problem I've not noticed, though I did see the symptoms on one of your servers overnight. Was that an attack?

XJaegaX: I think you might be right (crash restart), but I'll keep a note and confirm. tbh I haven't had many straight up crashes, its always blaze blaze blaze.

I've had a few "slow disconnects" yesterday, where hte players will lag out over say 20 seconds (and drop in batches) and fail log doesnt pick it up as a blaze - I wasn't online but I'm assuming the server "stutter died" where it just lags until clients timeout - this feels more like an attack or the host swapping out - stabbing in the dark really with 0 visibility.

Big dip on all ranking charts as my scanner died for a little while yesterday morning - there was no mass outage.

We had 3x drops this morning, nothing recorded in the sense of attacks, just appears to be blaze disconnects which happens.

No idea about last night either sorry went to bed early so didn't notice anything.

If you look at the GT rankings our new dedicated server appears to be running relatively well, amazing the difference when you specify your hardware and have control over the network.

Is there any update on this? It's really frustrating to get a game going only to have everyone dropped. :(

Looking at your page, spartans issues are going to be related to the maps they are running... had exactly the same issues when running those maps but they weren't blaze issues they were crashes.

Removed maps and server for the most part runs fine, I had to remove one map that was an issue still, for some reason it would always peg the CPU at 100% until it crashed.

I was beginning to think that, but Mr Blaze dropped by a few times yesterday for us. Hopefully this was just GS equipment and the issue has improved. Definitely a dip in blazes since around Wed last week.

Have not had a blaze for about a week unless they are now disguised as normal server crashes which we are still getting at least 1-2 a day.

If you can fill the slots why not try? Only a few bucks a month to give it a go.

There is however crap loads of empty slots in the lists and people sitting seeding servers for hours before they even start to get going.

The game itself has issues and as a result the player count is down a lot from what it used to be.

When the issues started i moved one server to a host that was not getting the blaze DC's and it is full every day from about 10am to 1am but they are way more expensive, i still have 1 server with ausgamers and have been populating it the past few nights without any problems so i think i might move the other one back here next month.

Also, didn't i read somewhere that we would be compensated for all the downtime?

Yup since about Monday, non stop mass disconnections.

My server is unplayable.

Went really well for a whole week, my server fulled up every night. Then the blaze disconnects started up, it is really disheartening to see my server get killed and lose players. I am guessing that some of them wont be coming back after this week.

Server highly unstable tonight.
I thought these issues have been resolved ?

Clan members tried to seed the server for some Friday night fun, but gave up, since it crashed 3 times in a period of 20 minutes...

I actually shut down my server till they can fix it, I do not want players wasting their time connecting to my server only to get disconnected before the round ends.

If it cant be fixed I will have to change service provider yet again.....

I dont understand why this keeps happening to my servers, I really wish DICE/EA would just let us host the servers our self so that we do not have to wait around for some one else to fix it.

Given their history it's not surprising that ausgamers couldn't even reveal their 'big announcement' when promised.

I moved to another provider almost 4 months ago and have only had 2 blaze disconnects the whole time. It has nothing to do with EA or Dice and everything to do with Ausgamers. They are simply not capable of delivering the service they charge for.

Well that was an eventful weekend with double XP and double the blaze events giving our members the chance to be excited and happy one minute and then wanting to tear the limbs off Ausgamers and DICE/EA employees the next minute. Its not everyday you get to see people expressing themselves from one extreme to the other and I even learnt a few more curse phrases and combinations as well.

It was going so well for a few weeks and people were getting faith back in our servers and enjoying themselves and then you announce that you're going to make an announcement with good news as well as giving away a free server and then everything goes to s***.
It just seems odd that things start to pick up and then bang its f***ed again.

Why did the wheels fall off again?

I think you owe us all an explanation.

The last week or two hasn't been the best for connectivity to the backend, we've dropped a fair few players over this period so not everything is ausgamers fault.

Double xp = increase in player numbers so there's bound to be more issues.

Wednesday was when the 3 b0oz servers started to get multiple blaze disconnections again not to be confused with the occasional server crashes and blaze events that were happening at least once a day for a couple of weeks before.

It may not be AusGamers fault all the time I do understand what they have said in the past about this issue however they do rent us the servers so there is an obligation on them to keep us informed of failures in the service and what if anything can or will be done to fix it. It would be nice to be informed.
AusGamers has said nothing about current issues and not making their big announcement kinda looks bad too, Especially when the s*** has hit the fan again.

Having a little rant about how unhappy our members are with the servers may give AusGamers some incentive to communicate with us so at least we have something we can tell our members because some of them are really pissed off. They are gamers they spent their money and they want to play and if its broken when is it getting fixed.

Today I have had 2 blaze events with less than 12 players in the server at the time of the events the last one was 1:19pm hardly what I would call a busy time for battlefield so I dont think its got much to do with the amount of players in the server or how many are playing overall on the servers putting strain on the connection to the backend although logic says more players = more problems and usually does but the player numbers for today could not possibly be the same as Friday night through to Sunday night.

I agree with what you've said, there's a reason we are no longer an ausgamers customer, but it does also come back to cost.

I pay ~1k a month at the moment vs the $1 a slot I was paying here, the difference is of course in how I'm looked after and the access that I have is vastly different.

I mentioned previously that we had a ddos issue, well guess what's mostly blocked now and it's clearly reflected in our uptime levels.

The players are not confused they know the game and connection to the servers are broken they are angry and want action as well as explanations.

Thanks for apology anyway I am just pissed off that this f*****g Blaze business is back and its bloody worse :(

Disconnections are still present which makes seeding our server an undesirable task, we cannot even go through one round without it crashing.
After persisting on a second round and yet again to be disconnected...

We all end up joining other servers which seem to be running well and continue paying for an empty server.

Hi!
When we launched AusGamers Server Rentals almost a year ago we were clear on our mission: to provide the highest quality dedicated server experience at a very competitive price. AusGamers has always put our community first, and we made it clear that we were sparing no expense and providing nothing less than an excellent product for you to enjoy.
We've invested a lot of time and effort into the Server Rentals service, so we've recently reviewed how well we have been able to meet our goals. If you've been a Server Rentals customer for a while you'll know that our servers have been constantly attacked and our international transit provider (our link back to the "Blaze" back end system) has been unstable and unwilling to assist us. We've added PayPal support, ClanPay donations and a store credit system to give more flexibility in how you can pay for your servers. However, taking everything in to consideration, it is clear that we haven't been able to meet our own standards on the service we provide to the community.
For these reasons, AusGamers is ending the Server Rentals service at some point in the near future. We haven't set a final shutdown date, but when we do we'll let you know.
As a final thankyou to all our customers we are keeping everyone's servers online for as long as possible at no cost to you. Any subscriptions that were renewed before 16 August will be online until at least 16 September. Any subscriptions that were due to renew or expire after 16 August have been kept online but will not be billed; the server is free for you to use until we need to finally close the service.
Any customer who has purchased un-used credit will be refunded the remaining amount.
If you have any questions or comments, please let us know at rentals@ausgamers.com
Regards,
The AusGamers Server Rentals Team.

Mr Malthius and Mr Eorl,

Defeat, failure, unhappiness and frustration are just stepping stones - once you have overcome and used them to your advantage, you will know true success.

Until you have become masters of your trade (ie providing servers) of course you will feel frustration after frustration - and no-one (AND I MEAN ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE) is exempt from this rule in life.

My advice - do not give up AusGamers - turn this defeatist attitude around - FIND OR MAKE A WAY to succeed and NEVER give up - otherwise you will be running from defeat all your life.

My server's ran great when they were not getting blazed so I would say that on that side of things you delivered servers that worked despite DICE creating a game that does not work properly and I think a lot of admins can't tell the differences between broken hardware and broken software or understand who is responsible for what part of each component.

When I put in a ticket for help I got help so you delivered it might not have been instant but it was usually on the same day or overnight and because my tickets were only answered by the same 2 people I am guessing you guys worked a lot of overtime, I know some other admins who didn't get help but to be fair they bragged about abusing you guys so I don't blame you for not helping them.

Throwing the towel in on this one may be a loss to Australian gamers in the short term but its not the end of the world and in the long run your effort's will be of value to the Australian gaming community.

The last 12 months has been interesting and frustrating at times but there has been some joy and for that I thank you :)
