I bought an AOC 28 4k monitor, it is pretty easy to set up and navigate so i thought this could be about all things 4k.

Running at the 4k bit resolution is not as good as i had expected and i had to pound the monitor into actually booting with the DP cable i had to use a DVI cable then set every thing up from the monitor display and the Nvidia panel.

The display 3840 x 2160 4k runs at 30 Hz 3840 x 2160 native runs at 60Hz,i also reinstalled my nvidia drivers as they had turbulence trying to run straight away.

I will try and find out how to fix the 30Hz.

You'd have to see that the monitor would support more than 30hz at 4k.

Pretty sure that they've been stuck at that refresh rate for a while, unless you go to Display Port 1.2. From what I've read (albeit, not much), 60hz won't run via DVI or HDMI.

It's one of the big reasons people shot down the rumour of a 4k oculus rift next year.

HDMI 2 is apparently the 'reference input choice' for 4K.
I LOVE DP as a standard; but haven't paid that much attention to the 4K space.

I chatted at length with a young sales guy who was runnin a 4K TV @ home (principally for 4K gaming and 4K Netflix content).

I don't see the benefits (at large) at present; but I am only too interested to hear about stuff like this (y'know, 'teething problems') so thanks for the post.

Apparently at present there is a 'non-reference' nVidia GTX 970 and the GTX 980 that have HDMI 2 ports on em.

120hz for life.

I only get like 60 to maybe 80fps TOPS on most games right. This is a 27" 1440 monitor that feels pretty sexy.

What does 120hz have to offer me?

120hz makes everything look smoother, even in Windows (just dragging a window from a 120hz screen over to a 60hz screen shows an obvious difference).

Personally I'd rather 120hz over higher resolution. Dual monitor solves space issues, not that a 27" 1440 monitor would offer enough extra space to justify using 60hz.

As for games, lower your settings a bit, the extra detail isn't worth 60hz either.

Well obviously if you can't get past 80fps, you'd drop the graphics detail down a bit.

Did you ever play games on an old CRT? Have you ever seen someone playing a game and thought "holy S*** that looks so smooth!"?

If your rig can handle 120fps, then the advantage is pretty big. It improves your aim and, in some games, can give you better rego in MP (Old CS for example).

I really want a 144hz / 120hz monitor myself, but I think that's a little ways off. Dropping $500 on a monitor the same size and resolution as the one I already have because I want a faster refresh rate is bordering on "I feel dirty for wasting money".

Nvidia in there infinite wisdom have given those without a 4k monitor the option to modify their settings to mimic 4k and that was the base of my dilemma my old drivers still had that option enabled after i reinstalled the drivers the 4k option disappeared.

I can also report you will need 20/20 vision as the desktop font's are pretty well compressed.

Running at the native resolution there is an improvement in small game details I use Far Cry 2 as my yard stick whereas before every thing was a little out of focus now the books are readable the roads have proper cracks and the skin looks real.

I have 2 660's in SLI and they seem to be doing much more work with this monitor at idle they are silent as a ghost fire up a game suddenly it's all men to the pump.

My problem with this is every 120 [or 144]Hz monitor I've sat in-front of and looked at always has really average colour reproduction.
The few models I've seen are ASUS branded monitors too (I won't touch ASUS anymore; one too many f***ed designs or s***** builds to warrant even investigating them).

Dell (who I like at present because the colour reproduction on the UltraSharps is just so purdy) used to have a 23" 120Hz Monitor (Alienware branded) but yeah; no more.

I'd kill for a 1200P 24" panel @ 120Hz /and/ decent colour reproduction.

That's because they usually just use generic TN panels. (and for me, that's already what I have, so it's not too bad.)

If you want good colour reproduction, you can get a 120hz IPS monitor for (insert money here) more than the regular ones. They are rare, but they're out there.

Yeah; I made the switch from TN to IPS panels; and I usually go for multi-array gaming (so a big (1440p+) monitor isn't for me).

I can't find much in the way of 1200p 120Hz IPS panels with some quick google-fu atm (120/144Hz panels are largely TN from what that cursory glance has shown) and I simply refuse to go backward now (in colour reproduction terms.., not that I edit photo's etc; but the 'wash' in TN panels makes my eyes bleed.)

Looks like it's 60Hz for me for now...

I was going to buy a 4K TV Until i realised, there's minimal content, and the input lag is high again.
As with all new technology, it needs time to refine and get cheaper. I'll be waiting.

With a gaming monitor though, I wonder what's more immersive, 3 x 1080P displays or one 4K monitor... i'd suspect its the former.

Well i can report that a 3840 x 2160 resolution regardless of whether you use the 4k slot or not gives a greater amount of detail and i do believe it is because of the compression of the screen (that is not a technical description i just made it up) what causes this reduction in size is a mystery to me .

4k TV is a crock, TV in Australia may be "digital" but it is definitely not being broadcast in UHD that's because most of the TV is reruns of American slops that were made in the analogue era.

Some sports are broadcast in HD and some TV shows like CSI Miami is HD,UHD! tell em their dreamin

Vash actually you will find there is a is hell of a lot of bandwidth pumped over FTA given that its using 13-15 Mbps on something like 1080i and doesn't have the congestion issues you see on tradition IP delivery.

Yeah I would say more than likely yes, and given multiplexing and channel bonding that could be possible not to mention what compression is implemented. From memory there is someone on here from the USA that in sports broadcasting thats doing 4k I just can't remember who.

Plenty is broadcast in 'HD' (720p). Not a whole lot in FHD (1080P) and nothing is 'freely available' in 4K locally.

Does digital over the airways even support 4K resolutions? Another reason we need NBN. bandwidth isnt keeping up with technology here.

No idea; but again, SFA is broadcast in FHD let alone 4K. Netflix has 'some content' in 4K and there are those 4K B-DVD's for it.
Outside of that; it's gaming as I see it; and then you're looking at a serious rig to drive it (then; still dealing with input delays etc etc).

Here is an odd thing a side effect of an almost perfect resolution, after struggling all these years with crappy drivers weird graphics the ins and outs of gaming from ME,XP and beyond i actually have no complaints no struggles this monitor's graphic display is so good i feel i have nothing left to do so i don't feel like playing games any more.

Their is some psychology going on here a sort of Stockholm syndrome where the computer with all of its foibles has held me in thrall for so long and now i feel the struggle for perfect graphics is done its all over,i think i need to go lie down on a couch for a while.

Both are samsung PLS panels (samsungs version of IPS). Colour representation is amazing (im a hobby photographer and photos in lightroom look amazing)

Also both can overclock to 120hz. Please note only get the DVI version, the multi input versions cannot overclock to 120hz

You can,
some lcd monitors you can overclock. Check the 120hz.net forums (and google CRU).

Im currently running 3x qnix 2710. Clocked at 80hz (they can run 120hz but to get the third monitor i need to run a Dp > dvi active adapter which is limited to 333mhz (or 1440p @ 80hz)

With a gaming monitor though, I wonder what's more immersive, 3 x 1080P displays or one 4K monitor... i'd suspect its the former.

7680x1440p @80hz is stuipidly immersive. I think this killls 4k anyday.

Dunno, i debeseled mine, but there is still a gap just over 1cm. To be honest tho, you dont notice much as you mainly look at the center screen, just glance at side screens to know more of whats going on. For example in payday 2 you use the side screens to know the whole scenario instead of mouse looking. Also you see action out if the corner if your eyes.

The immersion is magic, play something like aliens isolation or outlast and its bulls*** scary.

Also the qnix you can get for about 350 bucks, but running eyefinity 1440p and higher hz, ur gaming rig has to be up to scratch.

I also had a problem with only 3840x2160 running at 30hz.
What you need is a DisplayPort cable that is version 1.2, the first cable I bought was version 1.1, which is what 95% of stores have. I had to scour the internet for half a hour to find a shop that sells 1.2 standard DisplayPort cables in Australia.
This is what i bought and never had a problem since

On my home PC I play CSGO at a capped 120 fps on a Sammy low latency 60hz monitor. I occasionally play at a friends place who has a random Dell monitor, 60hz (capped 120fps) but a high latency of about ~20ms, and the difference is night and day. It's terrible. Although I suspect there is a little more going on in the display pipeline as I can't believe I can notice 20ms so easily.

In my opinion display latency is a big factor in monitor purchasing for gamers. It's hard to get immersed into a game when there is a noticeable lag time between input and display.

Well the dammed thing was corrupted to hell so i reinstalled W 8 and this is where the adventure begins.

I couldn't activate the OS ,so i couldn't install W 10 that is my dilemma so i managed to get W10 and the boot loader onto a usb drive.
These are the things i will try.

Format the SSD and boot from the usb.

Reinstall W8 without the key and try to run the update from the usb.

IF you have the extra dime you can buy https://www.asus.com/au/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG_SWIFT_PG278Q/

I have one on my PC right now it is a huge improvement from my old 1080p 144hz Asus gaming monitor and is easily one of the best monitors for games I have seen on the market and alot more PC gaming friendly for games like FPS/RTS/MMO etc.

In regards to 4K I went the TV route instead of the 4K monitor because essentially I wanted to create a more relaxed gaming environment for playing rpgs/sports/fighting games (everything that is controller friendly). This is closer to what a console gamer would have but instead I get the massive resolutions and graphics only a PC could handle. Another reason I went for the TV option was becuase at the time 30hz 4K monitors were the only option on the market for PC and ofcourse a TV is a TV which I use for Netflix 4K streaming on NBN amongst other TV oriented s***.

I pretty much have a 4K couch gaming in the year 2015 instead of waiting until 2050 when Playsation and Xbox finally caught up and probly 4K porn to if it wasnt 160gigs for a f*****g movie.

HDMI 2.0 is 100% perfect for 4K 60hz the next iteration will obviously support 8K and also be standard for TV's like HDMI 2.0 is for 4K TV's and monitors. HDMI is a home theater High Definition data cable that can extend more then 3metres and still hold its maximum bandwith making it ideal for the TV home theater set ups along with other substantial features in this area. Display Port is more PC oriented and is more common in that setting where hardware advancements are more mainstream and faster occurring which calls for a more flexible and robust high bandwith data cable design.

Well i thought i would have to buy a copy of W 10 just as an after thought i pulled out my W 7 disk the one that refused to activate which prompted me to get W8 which was refusing to activate because it was already installed on another machine that i can't get to boot .

So i dug out the SSD which refused to boot because well i am buggered if i know maybe leaving the SSD lying around for a while corrupts the memory so after much farnarkling and gnashing of teeth i finally managed to format the SSD and much to my great surprise i managed to install W7 and it activated, break out the balloons and confetti so with bated breath and fingers crossed i felt like a thief in the night i hit up Microsoft for W 10.

And it installed and i must say Microsoft have gone out of their way to be polite during the install with little words of support and pleasant explanations about how the whole process is proceeding.

As W 10 doesn't really have any direct X 12 games yet i have gone back to XP and W 10 looks like a bigger pig to get you're head around than W 8 you almost need a degree in computer science to navigate the system.

For most of our 4K stuff we normally use 4-8DP connectors depending on if its 3D active stereo or not. HDMI doesn't even get a look in. Now that we will have some 120Hz coming our way its going to be interesting to see what we can cook up to drive it

Normal config is a Dual 8-10c with 256GB ram and 4 x K5000's + dedicated gsync card + outboard sync for some other fun stuff. I would love to see what we could do with one of the larger machines but its way to cost prohibitive. I mean even this stuff is too cost prohibitive and you are not going to see it outside of a commercial setting period.
