Toy robot attacked by bull ants (video)

Here's a surreal kind of film I shot on a rural property some time ago. I'd classify it as experimental. A clockwork robot encounters a nest of angry bull ants.

The video has been gaining some attention on news related websites such as the ones below:

Good Music

Did you give it that tint ?
looks good.

Did you choose the angle for a reason ?

Thanks all. I think I'm glad that the robot didn't feel pain on this occasion!

Good Music

I'm actually glad of that cos I was hoping that it would be a decent substitute for the original music that I added to this video. I think the original music was better (it had this weird electronic sci-fi feel to it) but I had to discard it due to copyright issues.

looks good.

It was mainly shot in the shade and I set the camera's white balance to the 'overcast' setting (can't recall if it has a 'shade' wb setting) so that may have produced a bit of a tint.

Did you choose the angle for a reason ?

I chose a few different angles at the beginning of the video for variety. With regards to the ants swarming, I basically selected an angle that would make the action look more dramatic.

By the way, shooting around the ant nest was pretty tough in general. The ants were crawling over my tripod and camera as well as my shoes / legs. I had to be fairly vigilant to avoid being bitten and stung.

good video, is it stop motion of time lapse?

also do red dirt ants eat metal, maybe for the paint? or does it just look like a tasty small rodent until it stops moving for like 24hrs. I wish beer if they are like wtf is this let's get outta here when one or all of them figure it out

Video is regular motion. That robot can walk pretty well on it's own for several seconds on a full wind of it's key.

Those ants are super aggressive, especially around their nest. They'll attack just about anything that enters their nest, regardless if it's living or artificial. The only exception is a smaller species of ant who occasionally enter the nest and boss the larger ants around.

it's kinda interesting, maybe ants are 10% visual and 90% that nasty scent communicative

i always found green ant nests fascinating as a kid, just the way they would all fling out everywhere to defend the best when you'd chuck sticks at it up in a tree and it would come crashing down

that way actually a highlight of playing, f*****g up those green ant nests
